Here is one of three custom made bespoke turntables. It started out life as a Technics SP10mk2 and has been extensively modified by me an ex Marantz technician with nearly 50 years experience servicing and designing electronics and electromechanical equipment.

Being a musician my goal was to build a turntable capable of reproducing instruments as accurately as possible, and this turntable is closer than anything I’ve ever heard. The primary objective was performance above everything else.

No expense has been spared in the production of this turntable and is offered well below what it would cost to make. The entire unit has been CNC machined from high quality aluminium and Permalli.

The original motor housing was digitized to ensure the new housing was accurate and centered the motor stator correctly. The custom housing increases rigidity significantly. The bearing is precision ground solid carbide with advanced polymer sleeves requiring no oil. This setup lowers bearing noise in the platter to a level that is in the noise floor of the measurement setup. It also reduces platter runout (<0.03mm) and wobble (unmearureable).

The plinth is 100mm thick Permalli and aluminium and extremely rigid. It acts as a ground plane attenuating erroneous airborne and internal vibration before it gets to the stylus.

The platter is POM (Acetal) and high tensile aluminium. POM was chosen because it’s a good match with the vinyl allowing stylus energy to easily pass into the platter where it is broken up and attenuated before it can reflect back to the stylus. The LP is held to the platter via a custom made screw down reflex clamp. The clamping system is so good when the clamp is removed the LP is still stuck to the platter like vacuum hold down.

The linear tracking arm does away with the arm wand. The carriage is short and extremely stiff moving all resonance out of the audio band. The carriage uses pin bearings, which are made up of precision ground and polished carbide pins rotating in sapphire cups turning wheels made from hardened tool steel on solid carbide rails. The result is very low breakaway torque so it tracks those off center pressings with ease. The Linear Tracker is fitted with a custom cartridge.

The turntable also incorporates facility to mount a pivoting arm on the front and includes one arm board. The mount uses 30mm post so Micro Seiki arm boards can be used.
